Industry Circle: EU Taxonomy & Real Estate

The ca. two million buildings in Austria are responsible for 12% of the country’s CO2 emissions. The EU’s taxonomy for property and real estate creates a classification system for sustainable and environmental activities in the industry, and will have a significant influence over construction and renovation projects as well as property sales and ownership. The establishment of a reporting system with common indicators will not only create more transparency, it will make it easier to determine the value of property and real estate portfolios in terms of sustainability.

The following questions will guide our discussion:

• How will the EU taxonomy affect the real estate industry in the short-, middle- and long-term?
• What will be the role of the financial sector?
• What are potential challenges in fulfilling the six required environmental goals described in the taxonomy?

Following a brief introduction on the issue, we will break out into small groups to exchange on this issue. Insights drawn from these discussions will be integrated into Climate Lab’s programs and activities.
