At the start of this century, scientists began exploring what has kept Earth stable and resilient for thousands of years. Their research led to the development of the Planetary Boundaries Framework, first introduced in 2009 by Johan Rockström and 28 leading Earth system scientists. This framework identifies nine key Earth system processes that regulate the planet’s stability, from climate and biodiversity to freshwater and nutrient cycles.
Rather than fixed limits, planetary boundaries act like health indicators. They signal how much pressure Earth’s systems can withstand before we risk destabilization. Staying within these boundaries allows humanity to operate in a “safe zone,” but exceeding them increases the risk of crossing dangerous tipping points.
The Planet Boundaries Workshop
Inspired by the huge success of the Climate Fresk, the Planetary Boundaries Fresk takes a similar approach and provides new ways to explore the deep connections between biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change, helping people understand the interconnectedness of our planet’s systems.
Teams of players work together to understand how Earth’s natural systems are being disrupted in ways beyond just climate change. Then they discuss what action can be taken to solve these issues without shifting the problems elsewhere.
At the heart of the Fresk lies the belief that understanding planetary boundaries isn’t just about gaining knowledge—it’s about inspiring planetary stewardship.
