The drilling had finally stopped – that was my signal. I shut my computer and joined Sinzi from our expansion team to check out the progress on the construction site upstairs. When we opened the door, we were confronted with a wide-open space—stripped-down, raw, and strewn with tracks and tools.
As we strolled carefully through the dust, Sinzi began pointing out the first walls going in. She drew pictures in the air to show how the room would take shape—the outline of an office here, an alcove with a comfy couch there.
Contrary to popular belief, a really good coworking space isn’t just a giant room crammed with tables. Rather, it is a space that is thoughtfully designed with cozy nooks, airy community spaces, and quiet corners. It balances our need for focused work and productivity with opportunities for the chance encounters and personal chats that drove us out of our home offices in the first place.
As we walked, I thought about how much thought and effort it takes to transform the bare room in front of me into the vision that Sinzi was describing. So much more than just a floor plan, it requires a deep reflection on what we need to succeed in our work and our lives—time, space, focus, inspiration, laughter, personal connection. This room may look empty now, but I could already feel how it’s filled with optimism.
